When you have to face each day with the challenge of serious health issues, priorities come into play. A person facing possible blindness wants to imprint as much natural beauty on his or brain rather than images of silly television programs. A person facing hearing loss wants hear as much music, poetry or ‘I love you’s’ from loved ones as they can, rather than waste time listening to the daily tidal wave of mindless drivel, or the mountain of self serving political deceit, offered up by our politicians or self absorbed media.
Learning to live with serious medical challenges has it’s own rhythm, a kind of an awareness of balance and priorities.
The Anchoress post, Terror And the Hyperventilating Left And Right, is an example of someone who ‘gets it.’ She sees the hysteria of the day come perilously close to tipping over the liferaft we have to share.
After spending some time reading news, opinions and analysis from all over the web and in the blogosphere, I am struck by the way both the right and left lungs of ’sphere are in full-press hyperventilation over the breaking news of the last 20 hours or so…
The news is serious…so why is so much that is being written and spewed forth so wretchedly unserious? Why am I getting such a strong sense that – for some, note, I say some on both the left and the right (and in the media) – this event is an excuse for extraordinarily reckless, demented and self-interested excess? There are people out there who seem too-happily energized by all this – by the thrusty adrenaline-rush of the breaking news, the drama of a credible threat – and who are apparently using the story as an excuse to let not their better selves but their baser ones, shine forth in full glaring (and all too predictable) brilliance?

A pox on both houses and on… and many in Washington and in the press says I. A pox on their opportunism, their paranoia, their jingoism, their xenophobia, their extreme prejudice, their smug know-it-allism, their absolute know-nothingism, their love of the fever-swamp, their jump to cynicism, their eagerness to find fault with any and all solutions and with their barely-concealed glee through all of this.
On a day of serious news too many people – fixated upon their own agendas or their own obsessions – cannot bring themselves to put down the single-shot revolver they’ve been spinning for five freaking years and stop playing russian roulette with the national psyche…
Read the rest as if a big part of our future depended on it- because in a big way, it does.
The Anchoress is right, of course. Bigotry, stupidity and hubris do not distinguish between color, political affiliation, religion or creed.
In fact, all great political and social advances were the result of accommodations and compromises.
What that really means is that when all is said and done, we move forward when we sit down together, and agree to hammer out a compromise and come to terms with the idea that whatever that agreement looks like in the end, it has to move the nation forward, together.
The media loves drama- even political drama. The politicans have learned that the media pays attention when their fecal matter, that pompous heaping plate of self serving deceit is presented to the media that hungrily feeds on it.
Well, you are what you eat, as the saying goes. We would not be facing such mindless drivel and deceit if the media didn’t play it up. We may blame the media and the media in turn may blame the politicians. In the end, it is the politicians from all sides that are wallowing in their own filth and it is the media that eats the filth and tells us we need to eat it too- eating filth is good for us, they say.
Maybe that’s why we’ll never see the likes of Joe Lieberman or Patrick Moynihan again, for example. They never smeared themselves with filth. They really were better than the rest of their colleagues.
As a young boy in London, the author of SC&A can still recall, as if it were yesterday, his father reading the Gettyburg Address to him for the first time. That young boy was mesmerized with the power of American humility. We, in Europe, celebrated our victories with great speeches and parades that begat great speeches and parades, and toasted King or Queen.
Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us–that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion–that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
When the author of SC&A came here and visited the Lincoln Memorial for the first time, he read the Gettysburg Address, inscribed on the south side of that memorial, in a whisper, that to him, resonated like a symphony’s crescendo in a great concert hall.
Have we forgotten the meaning of this nation? Have we forgotten what it means to fight for something bigger than ourselves? Have we forgotten that the fight for freedom is the most noble fight of all?
Recall the a few words of an almost forgotten soldier poet:

- To you from failing hands we throw
- The torch; be yours to hold it high.
- If ye break faith with us who die
- We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
- In Flanders fields.

Something is rotten among the state of British Muslims. There is the imminent terror plot to blow up planes at a massive scale. There was 7/7. There are British Muslims supporting Hizabollah (even as other Brits go to fight for Israel). There were British Muslims going off to fight in Iraq. There were British Muslims going off to Afghanistan (although British Muslims are also part of the British army). How did it happen that a bunch of university educated First World kids started seeing themselves as some sort of revolutionists?

Israel has lost the war in Lebanon. The south of that country has been reduced to cement dust, half of that country’s infrastructure is a memory and parts of the area south of Beirut look like a moonscape, but hey, if Hizbollah says Israel has lost the war, it must be so. Hizbollah has always had Lebanon’s best interests in mind, right? Look for the Israeli government to insist on losing as may wars as they can, in the future.
Hey, it isn’t as if Hizbollah would lie, is it? It isn’t as if Hizbollah would attempt to manipulate the media, right? Hizbollah and their apologists and supporters are insisting Hizbollah is winning the war.
It’s hard to argue with logic. Egyptian Liberal intellectual, Mamoun Fandy, call upon the Arab world to support Hizbollah as it fulfills it’s destiny as victorious and heroic Arab warriors. Arabs he states, must resist and refuse a ceasefire.
“Since Hizbullah is ‘rubbing Israel’s nose in the dirt,’ defeating the Israeli army, and putting an end to its legend – something we have not seen in all of the previous Arab-Israeli wars – I am surprised at our demand, as Arabs, for a ceasefire! Please, let Hizbullah teach those scoundrels a lesson. Let Hizbullah continue its struggle to annihilate this ‘foundling nation.’
“The history of ceasefires as far as we, the Arabs, are concerned is one big deception. Did not the international community demand that we [agree to] a truce [hudna] in 1948? And what was the result of this truce? The result was that the ‘Zionist gangs’ deceived us and built the State of Israel, from whose crimes we have been suffering for 50 years, during which Israel occupied our land, massacred our children, and destroyed our houses. If only we hadn’t accepted the ceasefire at that time, everything that happened would not have happened!”

If the Israeli Army is being defeated day by day in Maroun Al-Ras, Taibeh, and Aitaroun, why should we let it catch its breath? Let Hizbullah wipe it out, and say together with me ‘no’ to the ceasefire, for we are advancing, and there is no need for us to be burned once again by the fire of the truce and the deception.
“What is the meaning of a ceasefire according to the Israeli conditions? The ceasefire in Israel’s view, dear sirs, means the presence of international forces made up of 15,000-25,000 foreign soldiers in southern Lebanon. It means that Israel would only withdraw after southern Lebanon is handed over to another foreign occupation – and most of these forces would be French!
“How can those of us who are intelligent agree to replacing Israeli occupation with a different foreign occupation, which would have 25,000 heavily armed soldiers, would take over southern Lebanon, and would have the force and the equipment to strike at the Lebanese coming from north of the Litani river to its south. How can we agree to this when we are winning? Our television screens tell us that victory is at hand, and are mobilizing us and equipping us for victory. The speakers on the television screens are our people, and I do not think that they would lie to us again.”

We must not accept this – and so I say no to the ceasefire!
“No to the ceasefire – not only because Hizbullah is winning on the ground, but also because it is winning on the television screens, and because all the Arab public stands behind Hizbullah and the secretary-general of Hizbullah. This public has never united behind any Arab leader in the past – not [even] behind Gamal ‘Abd Al-Nasser himself. Why, at a time of such unity, at a time when people are giving that which is [most] precious, at a time when thousands and even hundreds of thousands are volunteering to give up their lives – why, at a time when we have all this strength at our disposal, should we demand a ceasefire?
“The Arab media is telling us day by day that the Israeli army will be defeated within an hour. It is only a question of time. The Israelis are not capable of a land fight; they can only attack from the air. Bit by bit they will run out of planes and bit by bit they will feel the defeat. They will have no choice but to enter Lebanon, and then Hizbullah will pulverize them, since the equation on the ground, in an unbalanced war between a regular army and a group that is experienced in guerilla warfare, is in Hizbullah’s favor – as [Al-Jazeera correspondent in Israel] Walid Al-’Umri and [Al-Jazeera correspondent in the Palestinian Authority] Guevara Al-Badiri say. If this is so, then we will win the war, and there is no need whatsoever for a ceasefire.”

In addition to all of this, there is a nuclear state that stands behind our jihad, and it is capable of pulverizing Israel with missiles. This country is, of course, Iran. Israel has beaten the Arabs in the past, but this time it will not be able to beat the Arab-Persian coalition.
“We say no to the ceasefire, since Israel’s and the multinational forces’ plan would place southern Lebanon once again under the French Mandate. Is it logical that the outcome of Hizbullah’s struggle and of all these casualties would be the return of the French Mandate of Lebanon – that is, that this jihad would set Lebanon back 50 years? This is completely unacceptable. If we are to hand Lebanon over from one foreign occupier to another foreign occupier every 10 or 20 years, then our struggle is meaningless and our victory is meaningless.”

There is no need to pay attention to the games of Washington and Paris, since they are [just] the replacement of one occupation with another.

Why are so many Americans so furious at the MSM?
Simply put, it is because the MSM made it possible and for Adnan Hajj to py his deceit, and they enabled that deceit on a regular basis. Reuters and others in the MSM have merged their editorial department with their news department- one feeds the other.
There appears to be very little difference between Hajj and the editors at Reuters and other MSM news agencies. If anyone cares to dispute that, give it your best shot.
The MSM will tell you that they do a good job ‘most of the time.’ That is like saying, ‘you can trust us, really. We do the right thing most of the time, except when deliberately want to engage in deception, so that our agenda is served. Our agenda is good for you.’
Yeah, the MSM happy to think for you. The Anchoress is right.
Americans are – by and large – pretty well-educated and sensible. Give us the facts and we can put things together for ourselves, but give us real facts, not “frames,” “memes” or “narratives.” Give us real background, not carefully plucked and edited pieces of history.
Hajj and the editors at Reuters had little or no fear of getting caught- and they certainly had little reason to believe that even if caught, their careers as a ‘journalists’ would be in jeopardy. No doubt another news agency would hire them- after all, how much different are other MSM news agencies?
This is the perfect time for CBS News to hire Katie Couric. More people will tuning into the news broadcasts and let’s be honest- we all know Couric is the steppping stone for CBS News to venture into this territory, literally or figuratively.
The American MSM are in many ways, like great surgeons, that save many lives. They are also the same surgeons that will slice your arteries open if that serves their needs and biases. Naturally, they want you to believe on the saving many lives story. They don’t want you to see the blood on their hands.
That is no exaggeration. The desecrated Quran story, for example, the inflammatory stories, skewed images and presentation of terror as a legitimate ‘part of the story’ that come out of the Middle East have cost lives and have encouraged others to engage in violence.
CBS News ought to be shamed of themselves. Of course, that is presuming they have enough decency to know what shame is. If they don’t, perhaps someone from Reuters can help them out- you know, someone like Adnan Hajj.
Allah is, well, Allah. Big picture kind of guy.

Imagine a family of cannibals moved into the neighborhood you lived in. They come from a far away place, very different than anything we are familiar with. Not everybody from that far away place are cannibals, of course. Most are not.
That family of cannibals are a nice family, with a hardworking dad and a caring mother. The kids attend middle school and are on the soccer team and the gymnastic squad.
Nevertheless, the family of cannibals are getting hungry for what isn’t on the menu in any restaurant in any civilized country, anywhere.
One day, a neighborhood child goes missing and after a thorough investigation, it becomes clear that the family of cannibals are responsible for that missing child- and more.
There will be those that argue we need to talk to the cannibals, or we need to ‘understand’ what motivates the cannibals. Others will say that the cannibals must be allowed to ‘express themselves,’ even as they become a part of the American mosaic. Those same people will tell you that we must accommodate our new cannibal neighbors and adjust our lifestyles and even values. That is the American way, we are reminded.
I am confident that we will not lose our values; and that our overall moral heading can be recovered should we need to temporarily deviate from the course of the moral compass that guides us. Because, in order to combat and defeat this new barbarism, we must confront it and be willing to do whatever it takes to defeat it.
If we appease or ignore it, it will continue to menace everything we hold dear; and sooner or later, it will sink us–no matter how moral we are or how much restraint we demonstrate to their provocations. Morality and restraint will not win this conflict. We must be sure in our own hearts and minds of the endurance of our own values in order to do what is necessary.
Our uncertainty is sinking us already. Value by value. Look how willing much of the West was to compromise our freedom of speech in the Danish cartoons (no matter how “offensive” they might be taken) in order to accommodate the enemy’s threats. Soon, we will have compromised away all that matters to us; and our civilization will drown, little by little as it is taken over by the barbarians.
If we continue to appease them, we will drown in their ruthlessness and love of death.
The people who would blow planes out of the sky are cannibals.
The people who would apologize for those people are the same people who would apologize for cannibals.
The people who would ask us to ‘understand’ the ‘root causes’ of cannibalism, are asking us to accept cannibalism as an accepted and legitimate practice.
Makes perfect sense. Cannibals are just like us, right?
