Global Warming, Pheidippides And The Media

February 13, 2007

In an email exchange last week, The Anchoress noted just how agendized our news has become.

She remarked that the jury is is still out on whether or not humankind’s activities are the cause of global warming. The Anchoress went on to note that global warming science promulgated by progressives is the only science that is acceptable. Disagree and you are the equivalent of a Holocaust denier (which so far , is one of the only anti Semitic groups the left has not yet embraced). The irony of her observations strikes a chord. Nazi ideology demanded that the academic and scientific communities embrace their racialism as indisputable ‘science.’

Holocaust denial did not begin after the war. Holocaust denial began before the first rifle shot was ever fired or the first Zyklon B cannister was dropped into a ‘shower.’ In the same way the ‘science’ of racialism was politicized, so has the science of global warming.

In her letter, The Anchoress remarks are eerily reminiscent of another time, barely over a half century ago.

And those meteorologists, scientists and teachers who don’t join the march risk censure, unemployment, decertification…with the sort of
aggression that hearkens back to the mindless goose stepping of the early 20th century.

Yes, it’s getting very scary out there. I can’t believe I only wrote this the other day, and it’s already feeling less like porn and more like fascism.

In that post, Is Fascism Like Porn? You Know It When You See It? , The Anchoress’ mood is solemn:

When a formerly well-respected environmentalist like Bjorn Lomborg dared to dissent and wrote The Skeptical Environmentalist , he was sneered at and was suddenly considered less-than-credible. When Lomborg was invited by a newspaper to sit for an interview along with Al Gore – as a sort of balanced debate on the issue – Al Gore backed out because he could not control the debate. In that way, Lomborg did not get heard. It was a way to silence him. Michael Chrichton was a media darling until he took the time to seriously debunk global warming at which point he became something unclean.

Of course, global warming is an issue that needs to be discussed, examined, studied and even argued over, by the scientific community. What the study of global warming does not need is the politicization of the issue.

In fact, the politicization of issues, without regard to reality or truth, have served as the blueprints for state of the world at the moment. The movement to deliberately separate real science and real truth is a juggernaut- and if we don’t stop it, we will pay the price- again.

The Anchoress sees ‘ deja vu ,’ all over again:

And all the big people will continue with their lives apace. It’s the little people who will be affected by whatever they’ve got schemed…

I’m sorry if this upsets anyone. But this is getting very, very
alarming.

The sad fact is that there are now very few places to turn for real news and not just biased and agendized opinion. The significance of that cannot be understated because the media have served as the fuel that set the world aflame before. The perverted racist and socialist agendas of Nazi Germany, promulgated by the media they created and controlled, sent the German volk into a frenzy and then sent out the invitations to the the largest orgy of death in our history.

The media has created and framed the science of global warming. Politicians and celebrities are given center stage and scientists who are interested in science- and thus cannot be counted on to respond in the approved manner- are ignored, credentials notwithstanding.

In the end, it is possible that the cause for global warming might be the activities of humankind. That said, at the moment, we cannot say so for sure. Nevertheless, even if that proves to be the case, it is not for the media to make those determinations or set the agenda, anymore than it is it up to the media to determine and have the final say on the course of action required in the Middle East.

These are not esoteric ideas. Media irresponsibility is quite clear. Even as the MSM demands actions that would result in political settlements in the Middle East, they encourage terrorism in the region. It is as if there is no history, no reality, beyond todays headlines, which serves today’s agenda.

Terrorists are described as ‘guerrillas’ and terrorist organizations are ‘armed political factions.’ The truth is, you can’t have it both ways. As has been noted before, you can put an ape in a tuxedo, but in the end, it is only the ape that believes he is camouflaged.

That also applies to the media- members of a once respected profession are now regarded with the same credibility as car salesmen.

When biased media coverage encourages others to ‘stand up’ to the US and the western democracies (and ignores the atrocities and excesses that are always part and parcel of ‘standing up’ to America), common sense goes out the window. The incentive to reason and apply diplomatic resources will diminish, because the MSM encourages these dysfunctional misfits to ‘carry on,’ as if their insanity were ‘noble.’ It isn’t the media that pays the price for their agenda. That price, as The Anchoress notes, is paid by the little guy.

Evil is an interesting phenomena. It can only exist in an environment that feeds it oxygen, i.e., an environment that makes room for evil. That is not to say that those who commit evil are excused in any way, but, in fact, the media has provided evil an environment that not only fuels evil but encourages it and nourishes that evil. That the media is shaping and framing the debate on global warming is evil too, because they are attempting to limit and define what is ‘good’ science and what is ‘approved’ science. That is not unlike enabling an alcoholic or abuser. While in the end, the alcoholic or abuser must take responsibility and take control of his life, the enablers can delay that process for decades- and cause untold harm, pain, suffering, grief and broken lives, some of which cannot be fixed. Science will have to rescue itself, but until it does, untold havoc will be wrought.

Of course, the real media agenda isn’t about science or global warming. They are but distractions.

In 490 BC, Legend has it that Pheidippides ran from the plains of Marathon into Atherns, with news of a miraculous Greek victory over the Persians. The tale is told that Pheidippides made it to the city center and cried out, ‘ Rejoice, we conquer! ‘ and then he promptly dropped dead.

If Pheidippides ran today, the media would report his final words as ‘Rejoice, we are defeated!

The media need America and the American ideology of freedom to fail, because if America and freedom succeed, the media will be proved to be no different than the agendized media anywhere, anytime. If we succeed, the media will be seen for what it really is- Pravda , Izvestia or Der Sturmer .

Al-Jazeerah and Hizbollah’s Al-Manar are not a media outlets that have adopted American standards of journalism. Our media have adopted the journalistic standards of Al-Jazeerah and Al-Manar .

In Allied With The Truth , Dr Sanity lays the agenda out clearly:

…Patients may indeed need validation of their feelings ; but even more than that, they need to be able to objectively evaluate reality and see the truth–no matter what they may be feeling. In other words, showing empathy for a patient’s plight and acknowledging their feelings about their situation may provide them with transient validation and be helpful in establishing a good short-term relationship with them; but if you are not also “doing the truth,” then you are not going to help their lives improve in the long-run.

Compassion is not sitting around, crying and hugging them as they avoid the truth; it is bringing them to that truth, and standing with them in all their pain as they confront it.

Sometimes all you can do is ally yourself with the truth, and make a commitment to uncover it, no matter what unpleasantness it leads to.

There are some serious betrayals of all that this country stands for going on right now. The contradictory discourses that confront the American public daily in the media and from the left has made them confused and uncertain as to who to believe; and what is true. Enemy propaganda is presented as absolute fact. Anything the current administration says or does is angrily disputed and called lies.

The public is being manipulated by those they trusted to bring them the truth; but who instead resort to postmodern rhetoric with its neverending cycle of paradoxical accusations and hysteria.

In order to return to psychological health, the lies and distortions that support and encourage these betrayals need to be confronted and exposed, and a committment to objective reality and truth reaffirmed.

A 21st century postmodernist, who believe that the dictums of postmodernism are absolutely true, makes the statement that “all truth is relative”. Why should we bother to listen to anything he says?

The threat America poses to much of the world is neither economic or even social, really. America represents ideas that have changed the world and have upset the status quo. In fact, no nation has helped nurture more people and more societies escape the bonds of repression and persecution than America. Freedom is the antidote to victimhood. With freedom, comes the truth that far fewer victims for the media to embrace.

Most of those born in this country are fortunate to have no idea what real poverty, persecution and repression really are all about- and most of us born in this country have no idea how sophisticated those who resent us and despise the freedom democracy brings, really are, or what lengths they will go to in order or thwart the spread of democracy. Thus, it is no surprise that many Americans cannot connect the dots between their lifestyle and good fortune to live in this country, and freedom.

America remains the destination of choice for most of the world’s immigrants, despite decades of the American media painting this country with the blackest of stripes (have you seen any long lines at Palestinian consular offices for visa applications lately?). The vast majority of those immigrants understand that American greatness is not just about economic opportunity or offering a safe haven from the repressive and tyrannical regimes embraced by the media.

What sets America apart are the possibilities that originate with the freedom to dream and the freedom to explore the possibilities- and nothing the media does can change that reality. Like the other apes in tuxedos, the media that believe that their agenda can be camouflaged. They are celebrated only by other apes in tuxedos. Like the other apes in tuxedos, the media have come to fear free people who cannot and will not be controlled by a particular agenda- their agenda.

There are those in the media and on the left who have left the impression that they have come to hate America (that is the perception of more than a few Ameriacns) and what America stands for. They do little to dispel the notion that hate is what appears to drive them. Many give the clear impression they are driven to hate (and violence, or the support of violence) when they realize they cannot control others or their beliefs. In resorting to intolerance of those with differing views, they highlight the the reality that they cannot control themselves. They want what they want, when they want it and woe unto anyone who gets in their way. They are like immature and spoiled children. They are in a constant state of crisis, with the accompanying paranoia and delusions- and they will foist mayhem and crisis on anyone and everyone until they get their way. They may hurt people, cause others to go hungry and disrupt the lives of whomever they please, but none of that matters. They need to be at the center of attention, they need to right and they need to have their demands met.

These impressions may be wrong, but in fact, they are not new. There are many who see the media and much of the left in very adversarial terms- and have for a long time. Middle America and conservatives can’t always be wrong, all the time.

We wrote ,

Of the almost 7 billion people on this planet, only 300 million are Americans. To put that in perspective, less than 5% of the population of this planet are Americans- and yet, the world is obsessed with our existence and what we represent. In the course of just over 200 years, we have provided the world with ideas, contributions and realities that are in the consciousness of every human being on the planet. Given our numbers and short history, we should not have had this profound influence on history and mankind- and yet, we have. The secret to our our successes and influence can be attributed to one powerful word: Freedom.

The Anchoress is right. She closed her remarks with the following:

Sounds paranoid, I know. I know. But it’s not like this never happened before… Nothing about this is trustworthy, no one advancing this crap is trustworthy, and they have the power of the press fully behind them, unquestioningly behind them. That can NEVER be good for us little guys.

The media aren’t facing criticism because of their coverage of global warming, per se . They aren’t even facing criticism over their coverage of Iraq, the Middle East or anything or anywhere else. They have lost credibility and are facing criticism because they aren’t engaging in the primary journalistic pursuit of the truth. They have transformed a once noble profession into nothing more than a self serving, transparent bully pulpit . The emperor has no clothes and everybody knows it.

To the bitter end, the German Nazi era media went along with their grotesque denial of reality, truth and ‘science.’

History does repeat itself and in the end, millions will suffer and be made to pay the price.

It was more than that. All the NSDAP did was take Eugenics Theory (respectable mainstream science at the time) and ACT on it to its conclusion. Nazi racialism was late 19th Century “Scientific Racism” taken to the limit.

If it hadn’t been for the NSDAP’s example, Eugenics and Master Race Theory might still be respectable mainstream science. (And it may become so again, with the Holocaust passing out of living memory while genetic engineering both real and mythical comes to the fore.)

In an entirely different context last week, a speaker was questioned about the evil influence of politics, and responded with a hopeful view of political action, a vision of a pure civic virtue, that I admit exists in theory, and may have once existed in practice, but I regret is not really present or even possible today.

In our present time, we would be more honest to admit that “all politics is poison.” Through politicization we have poisoned our religion, our science, our education and our culture, and with it our media. I was a student of climate in the 1970′s, before the subject acquired any political interest, and I saw the frightening indications. At the time scientists talked of “climate change” rather than “warming”, and it is still a better descriptor for the phenomena. These scientific indications ought to be a concern for everyone, devoid of any political context, but sadly it did not work out that way, and many will suffer for our inability to think these questions through and respond.

At the moment the risk of a deadly flu virus is not a politicized subject, but what if the threat becomes more immediate? Will we be able to act? I am not hopeful. We cannot discuss the threat of nuclear rogue states; we cannot even perceive these questions except through the filter of our local animosities. I fear we’ll argue about blame and do nothing.

I heard Mikhail Gorbachev speak not long after he left power, when he was still a celebrity in the US, and he said one thing that struck me as prescient. He said that the only hope of a future for this world is that we find a way to overcome our tribalism. The present practice of politics, here and elsewhere, has elevated our tribal instincts to high art, and made them powerful. We’ve chosen the wrong road.
