‘Stupefying’

March 12, 2007

Stupefying. It isn’t often that word can be used when describing a Grand Canyon deep detachment from reality.

Leave it to Palestinian ‘experts’ to highlight and deepen the chasm that distinguishes and separates them and their supporters from the real world. In Honor Killings And The Palestinian Omerta, Fausta recounts the incredible Palestinian assertion that the blame for Palestinian honor killings can be laid at the feet of- who else?- but the Jews.

Soraida Abdel-Hussein, a researcher at the Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counseling in Ramallah, uses the word “femicide” to describe the killings.

She told IRIN that Palestinian society is undergoing radical change as a result of the daily violence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – and women are suffering as a result.

“Being under oppressive occupation gives you a feeling of low self-esteem, of being less intelligent, less powerful, less of everything,” she said.

“That hits the masculine identity – and women pay the price. Men internalize the values of violence. They replicate the roles of occupier and victim. It will become part of the culture – part of how you see people and they see you. We are now at the stage where it is radically changing our society and structures.”

Fausta goes on to note that ‘the occupation’ cannot explain the ever increasing number of honor killings and other forms of misogyny throughout not only the Arab world, but in western nations as well.

There are honor killings in Germany, Britain, Holland (where Ayaan Hirsi Ali, when she was a member of Parliament, insisted that Holland begin to count the number of honor killings) and other places in Europe (h/t PeakTalk), Turkey (see above), Pakistan, Syria, Jordan and in many other countries in the extremist Muslim world.

The concerted effort to place the blame elsewhere for the various cultural implosions facing the Arab world defies comprehension. As we noted earlier today in Tenured Deceit,

…just because Palestinians agree that hamburgers, fried chicken and pizza are terrific, we are [not] all the same

The same Palestinians who come home and have dinner and worry about report cards are also teaching their children to hate and sometimes, even to kill some people of different races or religions. They believe in the racist and bigoted rhetoric of their society and swell with pride as their children march to the latest Hamas marching ditty, ‘Hamas! Hamas! Jews to the Gas!‘ and they listen attentively as Palestinian media reinforce racism, bigotry and hate as ‘honorable’ expressions of Palestinian ‘dignity.’

After decades of failure at every turn with dysfunctional leaders at the helm, the Arab world and their supporters refuse to see their own dysfunction.

We noted

What could Jews- or anyone else, for that matter, anywhere, do to Arabs what their own dysfunctional political and ‘religious’ leadership haven’t already done to insure the failure of Arab society?

In a world full of conspiracies, many in the Arab world are convinced that they have been ‘chosen’ by the Jews are conspired against. Because they are somehow so special, so very special, it is they who are selected. That is not unlike the paranoid schizophrenic who tells his psychiatrist that he believes the CIA has implanted a listening device in his anus. They broadcast subliminal messages as to when he must defecate, so as to download the mental transcripts of his exchanges with aliens as well as his most private thoughts. That paranoid schizophrenic constructs an entire world around his delusions- a world that at once validates himself as a ‘victim’ and at the same time, highlights his own ’specialness.’

There is of course, another truth about conspiracies and conspiracy theorists. Whether they like it or not, conspiracy theorists invite comparisons with the object of their obsessions. In the inevitable comparison between Jews and Muslims in cultural, societal and religious terms, the contrasts could not be more stark. The direction taken by each group are separated by 180 degrees. Most, if not all of the direction taken by the Arab world is the direct result of the choices made by dysfunctional Arab leaders.

The Arab world’s deepest fears are that in fact neither Jews or anyone else cares about them enough to obsess over- and that is why the Arab world has to create confrontations and adversarial relationships with Israel and the rest of the civilized world. Palestinian and Arab world failures and missteps are their own and the blame for those failures and missteps can only be laid at their own feet.

As we have noted,

‘Imagine an entire life lived as a psychotic episode.’

That also applies to Palestinian and Arab world supporters, because to admit the truth that they have deliberately reinforced the same failed attitudes and behaviors that have created and perpetuated Palestinian and Arab dysfunction is to admit that they have failed, on a multitude of levels. That kind of self examination and self reflection is hard top come by. Dysfunctional people will come up with any number of reasons not to have to deal with reality. The Arab world is the perfect incubator for conspiracy theories- anything that might justify their dysfunction and preclude them from having to deal with those centuries of failure.

Read Fausta’s post and consider the implications of an entire society gone wild- and blaming others for their dysfunctions. As we have noted many times, left unresolved and not dealt with, dysfunctions only grow.

They never, ever, just ‘go away.’

    Thank you.

One thing I didn’t touch on, but that you and other members of the Sanity Squad have, is the ever-present “feeling of low self-esteem” as an excuse for even this kind of crminal behavior.

I have mentioned Necla Kelek’s book “Die Verlorenen Soehne” (The Lost Sons), which explores how many, particularly rural, Turks raise the children. It seems that the term low self esteem doesn’t apply in these families because a self is never allowed to emerge. The boys are little princes when young because they attest to their father’s virility. When they reach school age, they are taught that as Muslims they are better than others. As they get older, they are guarantors of family honor and told to watch over the behaviour of women in the family, in other words, to become bullies.

There are two rites of passage (my characterization) Kelek mentions: circumcision and deflowering their wives. In the first case, the boy is not prepared in a spiritual way for the event, which is carried out without any anaestesia; there is a huge family celebration, but the boy’s anxiety is ignored. Afterwards, they are congratulated, but once again, it is not a personal event; it is fulfillment of a tribal role. By undergoing circumcision, he has brought honor to his family.

The arranged marriage also substitutes the tribal role for the personal relationship. Often, a wife is sought for the son when he becomes troublesome. This moves him into a new role, and he first act is to produce a bloody sheet for the family to see. Basically, all he knows is that the woman is to obey him or the family will be shamed.

No one seems to care about these boys/men as individuals. Kelek does not say that this is true for all or even most Islamic families. But she does mention that immigration, even from the villages to Istanbul, is spreading these patterns. And since we all know what bullies can do to a neighborhood, it seems pretty obvious that the most dysfunctional have the power to spread their behavior. They can intimidate more moderate fathers by designating their standards as infidel. They become heroes to other teenagers, who respect their power and see it as an alternative to their otherwise low social status.

I got cold chills when reading this book. What it describes is the complete oppsite of the unconditional love you wrote about last week.

A change of topic, but your headline is appropriate for this tidbit: Social Democrats in the state of Lower Saxony want to revoke the citizenship of Adolph Hitler. I guess they’ll hire Nero to play for the ceremony.

There is a special horror when one traces the story through Fausta’s blog to Lebanon’s English-language “Daily Star” to “IRIN News.org”. IRIN News.org is the web page of the “UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs,” and the original story is here:
    http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=70554

Just to make sure that IRIN was actually affiliated with a UN Agency, I looked for and found a link to the IRIN web page through searches starting at the United Nations entry portal. Go here and look for the “Latest News (IRIN) link: http://ochaonline.un.org/

Sadly, I must accept that member nations’ UN dues, which is to say their citizens’ tax money, have paid for this staggering attempt to shift the blame for dysfunction and murder. The moral authority of the United Nations – to the extent it has any – has been lent to that ignoble exercise.
