Teddy’s Summer Simmer
July 19, 2007
Ted Kennedy pulled an all-nighter last night – how ironic is that? There must be something about Ted Kennedy and all-nighters on July 18, because it was 38 years ago tonight that he pulled another one.
At Chappaquiddick…
There’s Iraq, of course, which is what the planned all-nighter was about. And Teddy’s been trying to get some new “hate crimes” legislation passed. Ted’s very concerned about crime. Just don’t bring up any of the ones he committed.
You know what the Kennedy coatholders will say. It was so long ago. Hasn’t he suffered enough? How much does one family… blah blah blah.
But somebody’s got to mention it. I mean, right now the liberals are trying to run Louisiana Republican David Vitter out of the Senate because he had a few, ahem, indiscretions
So in the interest of recalling a sordid chapter of American history that the Beautiful People would like to consign forever to oblivion, let’s go straight to Teddy’s speech a week after Mary Jo Kopechne was killed when he drove his mother’s 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont off a bridge. (Comments in italics.)
“This morning I entered a plea of guilty to the charge of leaving the scene of an accident.”
And lost his driver’s license – not that it stopped him from driving, of course. A couple of weeks later he would be stopped in Waltham, for driving without a license.
“On the weekend of July 18, I was on Martha’s Vineyard island participating with my nephew, Joe Kennedy – as for 30 years my family has participated – in the annual Edgartown Sailing Regatta.”
You know Joe Kennedy – it would be another four summers before he crippled a young woman, Pam Kelley, in a Jeep accident on the other island, of Nantucket.
“There is no truth, no truth whatever to the widely circulated suspicions of immoral conduct that have been leveled at my behavior. Nor was I driving under the influence of liquor.”
Riiiiiiight. Just ask Sen. Chris Dodd.
Then the Delmont went into the drink, as it were.
“My conduct and conversations during the next several hours, to the extent that I can remember them, make no sense to me at all.”
Actually, for Ted Kennedy, they make perfect sense.
“I was overcome, I’m frank to say, by a jumble of emotions – grief, fear, doubt, exhaustion, panic, confusion and shock.”
Sounds like a bad ice cube to me, but you can trust Sen. Kennedy – he’s not like the others.
“In the morning, with my mind somewhat more lucid.”
Did someone say hangover?
“These events, the publicity, innuendo and whispers which have surrounded them and my admission of guilt this morning raises the question in my mind of whether my standing has been so impaired that I should resign my seat in the United States Senate.”
Another dream denied.
“For me this will be a difficult decision to make.”
Sort of like, Chivas on the rocks or Chivas straight.
Mary Jo died 38 years ago tonight. And yet we the people of Massachusetts re-elected him, in 1970, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1994, 2000 and 2006.
And isn’t that the real lesson of Chappaquiddick? In a democracy, you get the government you deserve, dammit.
Time for an SC&A overview:
Teddy “I forgot to call the police but I did remember to call my family, lawyers, the state Democrat machine leaders and Kennedy PR person” Kennedy can’t seem to put the strange death of Mary Jo Kopechne behind him.
Cable TV has gone to great lengths to investigate everything from the search for Noah’s Ark to using the latest forensic techniques to determine the cause of death of ancient, mummified Egyptians. How come no one is looking at the death of Mary Jo Kopechne? Are we waiting for all the witnesses to die? Why aren’t supporters Teddy ‘I forgot to call the police’ Kennedy demanding an investigation that might clear their beloved senator from Massachusetts?
Dr Sanity has plenty to say about the revelations that Teddy ‘I forgot to call the police’ Kennedy offered to conspire with agents of the former Soviet Union and to formulate a strategy that would preclude Ronald Reagan from assuming a second term in office.
To be clear- Teddy Kennedy apparently offered to help a foreign power interfere with the internal politics of this nation.
Read Dr Sanity for a an unvarnished look at the way things are, and not the way some would have you believe.
We had asked, “If Democrat luminaries such as Teddy Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, et al, had no trouble looking outside the US for political help and campaign money, why on earth should we not assume that some Dems are dealing with Iran, Syria, Al Qaeda, Hizbollah and Hamas, to further their political aims and ambitions?”
Turns out, that is exactly what happened.
Of course, he wasn’t alone- Jimmy Carter implored the Soviets along the same line. Powerline quotes Frontpage:
Soviet diplomatic accounts and material from the archives show that in January 1984 former President Jimmy Carter dropped by Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin’s residence for a private meeting.
Carter expressed his concern about and opposition to Reagan’s defense buildup. He boldly told Dobrynin that Moscow would be better off with someone else in the White House. If Reagan won, he warned, “There would not be a single agreement on arms control, especially on nuclear arms, as long as Reagan remained in power.”
Using the Russians to influence the presidential election was nothing new for Carter.
Schweizer reveals Russian documents that show that in the waning days of the 1980 campaign, the Carter White House dispatched businessman Armand Hammer to the Soviet Embassy.
Hammer was a longtime Soviet-phile, and he explained to the Soviet ambassador that Carter was “clearly alarmed” at the prospect of losing to Reagan.
Hammer pleaded with the Russians for help. He asked if the Kremlin could expand Jewish emigration to bolster Carter’s standing in the polls.
“Carter won’t forget that service if he is elected,” Hammer told Dobrynin.
While we’re at it, let’s not forget contributions to the Clinton campaign from China and other countries (Remember Charlie Trie?), or Al Gore’s campaign fund issues.
The Jawa Report noted a report from the Jerusalem Post:
Meanwhile, sources close to the PA government claimed that Hamas representatives recently held talks with officials from the US Democratic Party at an undisclosed location.
In an environment that has seen leaks of classified and sensitive information to the media in a tsunami-like wave, it is not unreasonable to conclude that sensitive and classified information has been passed on to Hamas and others that this administration and others have concluded are terrorist organizations intent on doing us, the Israelis and other democracies, great harm. It is clear there are Democrats who believe that undermining Mr Bush is more important than the security of the nation, in the same that Teddy Kennedy believed that undermining Ronald Reagan was justification enough to meet with those who declared their malevolent intent toward us.
If these reports are indeed true- and history gives us no reason to believe that these reports are not true- we have right to know which Democrats our enemies are consorting with and we need to investigate and determine if any classified or sensitive information was passed on to our enemies.
Notwithstanding photo ops and sound bites to the contrary, it is clear that Nancy Pelosi will tolerate a corrupt Congress. Time will tell if she is ready to tolerate a treasonous Congress.
