Visible Western Support For Georgia Growing: Sarkozy To Visit Besieged Republic
August 11, 2008
French president Nicolas Sarkozy is to travel to Georgia for meetings with the embattled country’s leader in a bid to help end hostilities with Russia.
Mr Sarkozy is to visit the Georgian capital Tbilisi following his previously announced trip to Moscow for talks with Russian president Dmitri Medvedev.
The French leader’s trip comes on the heels of French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner’s European Union peace mission to both countries on Sunday and Monday. Kouchner’s proposal for an immediate ceasefire was met with enthusiasm in Georgia, with Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili signing a ceasefire pledge.
Meanwhile on Monday, France announced the air shipment of a first load of humanitarian aid to Georgia and said the plane would bring home French nationals and other Europeans trapped in the Georgian capital because of the conflict.
The French foreign ministry said the decision to ship 30 metric tons of supplies, including tents, grew out of concern for the growing number of victims and displaced persons and the “considerable damage” caused by the conflict.
Fighting erupted after US-backed Georgia launched an attack on Friday to regain control over the breakaway province of South Ossetia. Russia then sent in troops and bombed Georgian sites from the conflict zone.

Do you have comments on RIAN’s article (http://en.rian.ru/world/20080811/115955128.html) especially regarding the statement:
“The August 8 attack on Tskhinvali came shortly after Saakashvili had announced a unilateral ceasefire in the area. Russia has said that some 2,000 civilians have died in the South Ossetian capital since the Georgian assault.”
If so, what is degree of trust to Georgian officials for August 11th ceasefire plan in a context of August 8th ceasefire plan break-up by the same Giargian officials?

Saakashvili had announced a unilateral ceasefire and was greeted by an increase in artillery coming from Russian supplied SO separatists. What would you do if you told someone that you wanted to stop throwing punches yet they still continued to do so? If you say sit back and take it you’re a liar.
