The American Spectator:

The long knives are out for Sarah Palin. Ever since John McCain announced that the 44-year-old governor of Alaska was to be his running mate, her qualifications, record, ideology, and even her family life have been under the media microscope and liberal assault.

Palin’s critics had but one objective: to discredit a politically talented woman who could energize the conservative base — evangelicals and others animated by taxes, guns, and babies — while also potentially appealing to disgruntled Hillary voters who wish to leave no glass ceiling unsheltered. An unknown outside of Alaska, the Democrats and their media accomplices hoped to reduce Palin to a cross between Dan Quayle and Peg Bundy of Married with Children. Because of this, her remarks to the Republican National Convention were more important than any talk by a vice presidential nominee since Richard Nixon’s Checkers speech 46 years ago.

The lady shined. Palin brilliantly defended her record as a reformer who stood up against the ossified establishment of her own party, in stark contrast with the man atop the Democratic ticket who has seldom mustered the courage to say no to the Daley political machine or the race hustlers of Chicago’s South Side.

“Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown,” Palin said. “And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Palin recounted the highlights of her record as governor: an ethics reform law, a budget surplus, tax relief for Alaskans, and an effort to curtail wasteful spending by big-government Republicans in Juneau. “While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor’s office that I didn’t believe our citizens should have to pay for,” she said. “That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay.”

Without directly criticizing President Bush and the Grand Old Spending Party that rang down the curtain on a dozen years of Republican rule on Capitol Hill, Palin talked about her “nearly half a billion dollars in vetoes.” “I suspended the state fuel tax, and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress,” she continued. “I told the Congress ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

That last bit may seem politically convenient now, but it in fact put her in direct conflict with the senior Republicans in Alaska, Ted Stevens and Don Young, the senator and congressman of VECO Corporation.

Palin also mounted a low-key but effective defense of her family and biography. “Our family has the same ups and downs as any other — the same challenges and the same joys,” she said, sidestepping daughter Bristol’s pregnancy but acknowledging Trig’s Down syndrome. “Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge. And children with special needs inspire a special love.” To the families of such children, Palin offered to be “a friend and advocate in the White House.”

And in attack mode, Palin showed Barack Obama that lipstick is indeed the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull. Listening to Obama speak, she said, “it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state Senate.”

“This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting,” she continued, “and never use the word ‘victory’ except when he’s talking about his own campaign.” Palin mocked Osama’s “Styrofoam Greek columns,” his big-government liberalism, and his emphasis in words rather than deeds without sounding like a harsh, red-meat partisan. She is no Rudy Giuliani, but good luck to those liberals who hope she’ll turn out to be another Harriet Miers.

Finally, the feisty Palin proved an able defender of the man at the top of the ticket. “There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you,” she argued. “In places where winning means survival and defeat means death… and that man is John McCain.” She made the case for McCain’s journey from Hanoi Hilton to the White House.

To be sure, Palin is not without her faults. Her rollout by the McCain campaign was sloppy. Her foreign-policy resume is thin, undermining a key Republican argument against Obama. Her association with this ticket could undercut her tendency toward a more independent conservatism and deprive Alaska of a successful reform-minded governor. It isn’t clear that even her performance at the convention will move her beyond a base-pleaser to a running mate attractive to swing voters.

But tonight Palin drove home the message that she his the kind of maverick the GOP’s conservative grassroots could love. And love her they did. “Hockey mom! Hockey mom!” the crowd in the arena chanted as she spoke. “We love you Sarah!” a man shouted as her speech began. “We love you!”

Once she finished, the response from delegates and others at the convention was near-euphoric. As one beaming Republican activist from Ohio put it, “That’s our girl!”

While the foriegn Policy issue creeps into every conversation people did not catch what she said in that aspect last night…especially in regards to energy.
She hit on Russia’s attempt to take the last free oil pipeline that feeds Europe…allowing Russia to use energy as a weapon against the West. She remarked on iran hold 1/5th of the worlds known oil. The terrorists attack on the Saudi facilities last year. The situation in Venezuela with Chavez.
In each of the cases she cited location, countries involved, the situation, and the potential outcome. She was 100% correct in each of the cases.
Sounds like she’s pretty up on Foriegn Policy issues (especially related to energy) to me.

  2. Wil Burns Says:

Big deal, she cites a bunch of locations. The speech was WRITTEN FOR HER. I could probably read twenty lines of Swahili if someone taught me how to pronounce it and I rehearsed it. She was a sportscaster. She won’t talk to the press; let the press ask her some specific questions about these facilities and I bet she’ll look like an idiot.

  3. SC&A Says:

Yeah- the 80% plus of Alaskans who give her teh highest approval rate of any governor have all been hoodwinked- unlike you, of course.

Maybe they need to go into therapy- know what I mean?

    Sure you do.

  4. Ken Says:

I bet Joe Bidens rearend is cutting button holes….He may think he is the smartest man in Washington…..But if she slips up on him…….He will be the laughing stock of the senate…The pressure is on Joe…

“The speech was WRITTEN FOR HER.”

Here’s a news flash for you Wil. All politicians have speech writers. Obama has a whole team of writers who pore over every line, every word.

Joe Biden has speech writers, in addition to borrowing liberally from other famous speeches.

You’re trying to imply that the Gov. just got up and read what someone else wrote. The reality is, the speakers work with the speech writers to craft a speech that reflects their message and beliefs.

  6. Chad Says:

In no way did Palin speak to the middle. I’m as middle as it gets, and her cheerleady style gave me major cringe factor. Zero substance in the speech.

She appealed to the Nascar, bible thumping, toothless, uneducated, extreme right wing. No moderate is buying into her anti-abortion, anti-sex education, anti-birth control social views. She described the Iraq war as a mission from God. We moderates won’t vote for her no matter how many cheesy one-liners she spouts.

  7. Chad Says:

And oh, BTW, more bad news about the economy today:

    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/080904markets.aspx

We really can’t tolerate four more years of this.

  8. SC&A Says:

    Yes Chad, I see:

Then again, what would the WSJ know about the economy compared to you?

  9. SC&A Says:

As for substance, you see it in Obama, right?

    LOL

  10. Kibby Says:

The Obama campaign is in total fumble mode after McCain blind sided them with Sarah.

In his initial response Obama managed to insult small towns, women AND define the contest as one between him and Sarah. What a doofus.

After her speech last night the best Obama could come up with was a whine that she had a speechwriter – as Sarah probably say, “well DUH, like I’m the first national candidate that has help from a speech writer”.

Biden did even better – his whine is that she didn’t say anything about the “middle class” — Uh Joe? She IS the middle class, she doesn’t have to try a convince anyone of that … it’s perfectly clear.

This is actually one of the problems for the Obama/Biden ticket – they spend all their time trying to convince people of who they are … McCain and Palin don’t have to waste time with that. We know McCain and got to see Palin – what they are is evident, they are “real” people.

  11. Vinman Says:

Even the talking pinheads of the chattering class had to admit that she ‘hit it out of the park’. The messiah’s handler’s have to be ****ting their pants right now. The polls will tighten. The Lame Stream Media pollsters will keep it tight by trying to write the narrative and shape public opinion rather than measure it, and try to carry the “ONE’s” water for him. But when their collective reputations are on the line and the water is too heavy to carry any more, the truth will finally come out. This will undoubtedly be a landslide election and Osamaobama will be the new McGovern and Mondale of our time. The only poll that counts is the one on Nov. 4th.

    Nobama

  12. Peter from Dover NH Says:

    Axelrod writes for Obama. So?

There was no doubt in anyone seeing her that the words match her and her record. They didnt make up her history; her accomplishments.

This is unlike Obama who lays claim to a record that is fantasy. He claims he worked on legislation he did not work on or bailed out. As Rudy said, a Mayor can’t just be present.

Zero, Zero, Zero….. That’s the big O we’ve all been waiting for.

  13. colortheory Says:

She’s definitely a good talker, but still..

    1. she’s banned books
    2. she doesn’t believe in evolution
    3. she doesn’t believe in global warming
    4. she’s being investigated for possible criminal wrongdoing
    5. she’s cut funding for sex-ed programs (which sure paid off for Bristol)
    6. she belongs to a church that claims anyone who criticized Bush will go to hell.

I think she’s great, a charismatic leader for sure. She definitely fired up that room full of the last remaining Bush supporters but how many independents do you think she’ll really win over with that kind of (slim) record? And once Hillary takes to the campaign trail, how many women do you think her anti-woman platform will really appeal to? I wouldn’t underestimate her political skills, but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think some of these things will be a liability. Oh and that Osama/Obama thing is really clever…I’ve never heard that one.

  14. Viola Jaynes Says:

Siggy, I would love to see a post come up from you on Palin’s speech last night. Great post here though…but I like, really like reading your stuff!!! :-) Miss you!

  15. SC&A Says:

She’s ‘banned’ books? Made them unavailable?

She doesn’t believe in evolution? Aren’t her beliefs private- or are you proposing their be a means test for beliefs- like the Nazis or communists?

There are scientists who don’t believe in global warming. See above re evolution.

She’s being investigated? As in the kind of associations like Obama and Biden?

She cut funding for lots besides sex ed- and since when does the left care about teenage pregnancy? See NARAL!

She belongs to a Church you don’t approve of- I suppose you hate Muslims as well for their beliefs.

All in all you are a bigot.

Know what I mean? Sure you do!

  16. Dave H Says:

You can really tell how generally uninformed and politically inexperienced Obama’s most rabid supporters are. This “but she had a speechwriter” meme is all over the internet. Every national politician has a speechwriter. Obama’s got a team of them, as does McCain, and Biden, and Hilary, and Bill, and Nancy (if Harry Reid has one, you can’t tell, but I’m sure he does). Any politician that powerful who actually composes the nuts and bolts of a speech (as opposed to polishing a draft) is merely wasting his own time and the taxpayers’ or campaign donors’ money. This is really what you expect in a president, a guy who writes his own speeches? FDR and JFK are rolling over in their graves.

  17. smmtheory Says:

    Hey Chad, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a moderate (unafiliated with any political party and split ticket voter all my adult life), and I’m going to vote for her and McCain. Ooh, but that’s right! I’m a REAL moderate, not an anti-right claiming to be moderate.
