Quebec’s specialist doctors are overwhelmingly in favour of legalizing euthanasia, according to a survey conducted by their professional association. The poll by the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec found 75 per cent of doctors think the government should establish a legal framework that would allow them to help near-death patients accelerate their demise. The doctors are also urging the FMSQ to take a public stand on the matter. Nonetheless, 20 per cent of those polled say that even if euthanasia were legalized, they would refuse to perform it. A majority of medical specialists say they support euthanasia, even if 20% of them refuse to practice it if it was legal.

That is according to a poll commissioned by the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec (FMSQ) among its 8,000 members, of which 2025 have répondu.Au total, 84% of respondents say they are open to launch a debate on euthanasia and Three quarters said they would “probably” or “definitely favor” an opening to legalization.

More than half of doctors who responded to the survey also willing to practice euthanasia “in a legislative framework marked. By cons, one in five would refuse.

“Euthanasia is at a point now which is almost identical to that where abortion was 21 years ago. Exactly the same debate today, “said FMSQ President, Dr. Gaétan Barrette.

The difference, says Dr. Barrette is that doctors are now showing majority support for a debate on euthanasia, which was not the case at the time with abortion.

The poll commissioned by specialist doctors focused specifically on the issue of euthanasia, not assisted suicide. “The assisted suicide is a subject in itself is completely different and that, by definition, does not question the practice of medical specialist, as opposed to euthanasia,” said Dr. Barrette.

Euthanasia is not permitted by law, but in practice it is common in hospitals. The survey also reveals that 81% of doctors have been aware “often, sometimes or rarely” to such a practice.

It is usually trauma to the road, brain dead, which are disconnected or terminally ill patients receiving palliative sedation.

It is a delicate issue that requires tags. The decision must be made by the doctor and his patient or his relatives if he is unable to do so, says Dr. Barrette. “The more we go back upstream of the terminal, it requires more beacons because the question is: Where will we?”

The legalization of euthanasia is a federal issue. For cons, the Quebec government is concerned about the issue.

“We must make it a debate. There was an evolution of society over that. Also, what is needed is to clarify the terms. It is sometimes called palliative care, sometimes euthanasia, assisted suicide, they are completely different words. I have an opening to receive the opinions of people that, as a society, we do a debate and, if possible, a consensus is sought, “said Health Minister Yves Bolduc.

A working group appointed by the College of Physicians recommended in the spring that euthanasia is part of the care end of life. The Board of Directors of the College should discuss at its next meeting. The Federation of General Practitioners of Quebec will also decide after consulting its members.

The poll commissioned by Ispos Decarie FMSQ was conducted on the Internet and by mail between August 28 and September 15, 2009. The margin of error is 1.9 percentage points 19 times out of 20.
